Parallel State

On the 1st February, 2020 at 1400 hours, the Parallel State was formed in Huddersfield, UK, by artist Simon Poulter. Initially a response to Britain and Northern Ireland exiting the European Union, the Parallel State is a breakaway state, offering free citizenry for those seeking alternative solutions to life on earth. The Parallel State is actively seeking new citizens from all parts of the globe.

Parallel State operates in many spaces in diverse forms, from podcasts to in real life and online events. 

Inspired by my citizenship and subsequent co-curation of the event programme in 2021, I wanted to represent this rhizomatic collaborative community that encourages continuous evolution. This academic text was written during my MA studies and includes links to works by artists and academics who have become citizens.
